Safety

Acknowledgement of Risk

Please read this before your first session. By RSVPing for or attending a Run Walk Coffee Club session, you agree to the terms below.

1. About the activity

The AI & Society Run Walk Coffee Club (the Club) is a free, social, all-paces group run and walk organised by Sophia Arkinstall, trading as AI & Society (the Organiser). Sessions are typically a 5–6 km return route on public paths along the Brisbane Riverwalk, starting and finishing at Felons Café, Howard Smith Wharves, followed by an optional coffee. Routes, times and locations may change, and sessions may run in other cities.

The Club is not a coached or supervised training program. Volunteer run leaders help with the route and timing only; they are not fitness, medical or first-aid professionals unless stated.

2. Risks of taking part

Running and walking have obvious and inherent risks that cannot be removed entirely, even with care. These include:

  • Physical strain: sprains, strains, falls, blisters, fatigue, and in rare cases serious cardiac or respiratory events.
  • Environment: heat, humidity, sun, rain, low light and slippery or uneven surfaces.
  • Shared public spaces: cyclists, e-scooters, pedestrians, dogs, vehicles at crossings and other path users.
  • Personal property: loss of, or damage to, belongings brought to a session.

Not every risk can be predicted in advance.

3. Your responsibilities

By taking part, I confirm that:

  1. I am physically able to run or walk 5–6 km at my own pace. If I have a medical condition, injury, pregnancy, or am unsure about my fitness, I will get advice from a doctor before taking part.
  2. I will choose my own pace and distance, and stop or slow down if I feel unwell.
  3. I will follow road rules, keep left on shared paths, and watch for other path users.
  4. I will follow reasonable directions from the Organiser and run leaders, including the safety briefing.
  5. I will bring water, wear suitable shoes and clothing, and use sun protection.
  6. I will tell a run leader if I leave the group early or if I am injured.
  7. I am responsible for my own belongings.

4. Acknowledgement of risk and release

I acknowledge that:

  • I take part voluntarily and at my own risk.
  • I have read and understood the risks described above, and that they are obvious and inherent risks of running and walking in public spaces.
  • To the extent permitted by law, I release the Organiser, its volunteers, run leaders and partner venues from liability for any injury, loss or damage I suffer while taking part, except where it is caused by their negligence, wilful misconduct, or as the law otherwise does not allow liability to be excluded.
  • Nothing in this document excludes any rights I have under the Australian Consumer Law or other laws that cannot be excluded.

5. Medical help, photos and privacy

Medical assistance. If I am injured or unwell and cannot make decisions, I consent to the Organiser or run leaders calling emergency services (000) and arranging first aid. I am responsible for any ambulance or medical costs.

Emergency contact. I will provide an emergency contact name and phone number at registration.

Photos and video. Photos and video may be taken at sessions and shared on AI & Society channels (LinkedIn, Instagram, Strava, Meetup and the website). If I do not want to appear, I will tell the Organiser at the start of the session.

Privacy. My registration details are used only to run the Club, contact me about sessions and respond to an emergency. They are not sold or shared with third parties, except emergency services or an insurer if an incident occurs.

6. Under 18s and agreement

Under 18s. Participants under 18 must be registered by a parent or guardian, who agrees to these terms on their behalf and either attends with them or accepts responsibility for their supervision.

Agreement. This acknowledgement applies to every Club session I attend from the date I agree to it, until I tell the Organiser otherwise.

This is a general acknowledgement of risk for a free community activity. It does not limit any rights you have under law that cannot be excluded, including under the Australian Consumer Law. Last updated 24 October 2026.

See you under the bridge.
